Ultrasonic quilts is a unique bedspread, which is made by using advanced ultrasonic technology. This technique includes the use of ultrasonic waves to create sewing patterns on the fabric without using any stitches or threads.
In the production process, two layers of cloth are placed together with a layer of filler in the middle. The ultrasonic wave then acts on the top layer of the fabric, heating and melting the fiber. Components of Ultrasonic Quilts
Quilt front/top
So, the main part of a quilt and generally the first part you will construct is the Quilt Front/Top. It can also be broken down into the following; blocks, borders and washing. There are several different techniques when it comes to making the Front/top including Traditional Piecing, English Paper Piecing (EPP), Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), Quilt As You Go, Appliqué and Wholecloth.
Quilt wadding
When it comes to wadding/batting there are lots of choices out there. You can choose from different fibre content (including cotton, bamboo, wool & polyester), different lofts (thicknesses) and it comes in different widths. Quite often on the wadding packaging it will have a guide to how wide/narrow the quilting stitches need to be so this will also influence what you choose depending on what quilting technique you will use to join your layers together. In the future I will be writing a more in depth article, so keep an eye out!
Backing
The last layer of a quilt is the backing, this is normally a single piece of fabric however when a quilt is very wide you will need to join several pieces together to get the right size. Generally the back is not made of patchwork squares as it’s difficult to line up the blocks when quilting (although some people do use fabric scraps to make the back!).
Quilting techniques
Once your quilt is layered together, Quilt Front/Top, wadding and backing you will stitch the layers together. There are several different techniques to try including Machine Quilting, Hand Quilting and Hand Tying.
Binding
Binding is the last part of construction. Often it is made by joining strips of fabric to create a long length. This is then applied to a quilt. Generally the binding is folded in half, the raw edges matched up the raw edges of the quilt, sewn with a 1/4” seam allowance and then folded over to the back of quilt where it is stitched by hand.

Following the manufacturer’s care guidelines is vital for preserving the quality of the fabric. By adhering to these maintenance practices, you can extend the lifespan of your quilted or ultrasonic fabric and continue to enjoy its benefits for a longer period.
How to maintain Ultrasonic Quilts
Inspect the quilt
Before you wash your quilt, inspect it for any wear and tear. If you find any loose threads or seams that are stretched out, now is the time to whip out the sewing kit and make small fixes. That way, you’ll avoid making small damages worse when washing the quilt. If you don’t have a sewing kit or don’t know how to sew, you should get help from a seamstress.
Prepare the tub
First, make sure your bathtub or large sink is clean. Give it a quick once-over rinse to ensure there’s no soap residue. Then, fill the tub with cold water. Next, add your gentle, dye-free, perfume-free, liquid detergent to the tub. You may also use a special quilt soap if you can find one.
Soak and gently agitate the quilt
Submerge the quilt entirely in the water. Gently move the quilt around in the water, swirling it around with your hands. This will help remove any dirt. Leave the quilt submerged for 10–15 minutes.
Then, drain the soapy water from the tub. Fill the tub once more with fresh water and add half a cup of distilled white vinegar. The vinegar will ensure that any detergent residue will be removed from the quilt and will help keep the fabric soft after washing. Gently swish the quilt around for another minute.
Rinse the quilt
Next, rinse the quilt. Drain the water from the tub again, and then refill it with more cold, fresh water. Agitate the quilt in the water again to remove any remaining detergent. Repeat the rinse process again until the quilt is completely free of detergent.
Remove and air dry
Once you drain the tub, you will need to remove the quilt. A wet quilt can be surprisingly heavy, so you may need to enlist a friend for help.
You can gently squeeze out some of the water, but don’t wring it out — that can put too much stress on the quilt. It’s also not a good idea to hang a wet quilt from a clothesline because it may risk tearing the seams. Instead, you can use a drying rack. Or, move the wet quilt to a bed of dry towels and spread it out completely flat on the ground. You can put a fan on the floor or open a window to speed up the drying process.
Put more thick towels on top of the quilt to help soak up some of the water. If you have enough towels, you can press or roll up the quilt between the towel beds and then move the quilt to another layer of towels to finish drying.

When it comes to quilts, loft is key! The loft refers to a quilt’s thickness or fluffiness, the thing that gives you that cosy feeling that makes you never want to leave your bed.
If you suffer from allergies, you should absolutely consider choosing a hypoallergenic quilt. We know how frustrating it can be to feel like you’re constantly battling allergens, especially when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Hypoallergenic quilts are typically made from synthetic materials such as microfibre, which are less likely to cause allergic reactions.
GSM stands for grams per square metre and is a measure of a quilt's weight and warmth. A higher GSM means a heavier quilt and more warmth. If you're looking for a quilt that will keep you warm in winter, choose a quilt with a higher GSM. For a quilt that's suitable for all seasons, go for a medium GSM.
Lastly, consider the longevity of your quilt. By swapping your quilts seasonally, you can extend the life of your bedding. Heavy winter quilts are subject to more wear and tear than lighter summer quilts, so rotating your quilts can help distribute the wear and keep them in good condition for longer.
