The term "quilt" comes from the Latin culcita, meaning a stuffed sack. The word has come to have 2 meanings. It is used as noun, meaning the 3-layer stitched bedcovering. It is also used as a verb, meaning the act of stitching through the 3 layers to hold them together.
A quilt is a cloth sandwich, with a top, which is usually the decorated part, a back, and a filler in the middle. Under the general term of patchwork are of 3 different types of quilts: (1) the plain or whole cloth quilt, (2) applique quilts, and (3) pieced or patchwork quilts.
The quilt, as we know it in America, was originally a strictly utilitarian article, born of the necessity of providing warm covers for beds. Quilts were also used as hangings for doors and windows that were not sealed well enough to keep out the cold. Considerations for Designing Printed Quilts
Find out what color model your printer uses (most often CYMK or Lab) and choose your colors accordingly. You should expect colors to appear differently on the fabric than on your computer screen. It’s easy to get caught up in the artistic aspect of creating a beautiful design and lose sight of the fact that fabric is never the end product – it’s always a part of something else. Make a habit of picturing the print as part of the finished product, especially concerning the size of the print. I have a ruler next to my computer – whenever I can’t quite decide if the scale is correct, I’ll hold the ruler up to the screen and zoom in or out until the size matches up. Sounds silly, but it works!
The color and texture of the fabric can have a noticeable effect on the print. Shiny fabrics like silk reflect light and can make the print seem lighter – thin fabric can be translucent and this will make print look washed out. Most digital printing services offer affordable swatches – even if they only sell by the yard, you can gang up a couple of designs onto a single yard.
It may seem like a good idea to use digital printing to make a copy of a popular commercial print that is no longer available, but unlike clothing designs, print designs can be (and usually are) copyrighted by the artist or the manufacturer. It’s best to stick with your own unique designs – if you’re not artistically inclined, you can always hire a designer to make the perfect print for you.

How to Maintain Printed Quilts
Before washing your quilt, check the label for specific instructions. Some quilts may have special care requirements or materials that cannot be cleaned in a machine. Without special instructions, you can move on to step two.
If your quilt has any stains, it's important to pre-treat them before washing. Use a gentle stain remover and let it sit for the recommended time before washing. You can buy a product that won't hurt the delicate stitching and fabric or make your own using equal parts water and white vinegar.
Pre-treat the stain by gently dabbing it with a cloth or soft-bristled brush. Do not rub the stain vigorously, as this can cause damage.
Selecting the right detergent is crucial when washing your quilt. Avoid harsh detergents or those with bleach, as they can damage the fabric and colors. The best option is to use a gentle, mild detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics. You can also opt for a quilt-specific detergent if you prefer.
When washing quilts, cold water is the way to go. Hot water can cause shrinkage and damage the fabric fibers. Many washing machines offer "cold" or "room temperature" settings, so make sure these are selected for both the soaking and rinsing cycles.
When washing your quilt, you want the machine to act similarly to a hand wash, moving gently to avoid disturbing the fabric. Also, make sure to wash the quilt all by itself so it has plenty of space to move around.
You will want to avoid using fabric softeners as these can leave a residue and damage the fabric.
Select a gentle cycle, preferably one specifically for delicate items like quilts. You can also use the manual option on a washing machine to select the slowest spin speed. This will prevent damage to the quilt's stitching and fabric.
Selecting the extra rinse cycle is okay, especially if the quilt is heavy or large. This will ensure all the detergent and cleaning agents are rinsed out completely.
After washing, it's important to dry your quilt properly. You can opt for air drying or tumble drying on low heat. As mentioned before, ensure your quilt's label says using a dryer is safe. There may be delicate applications that won't hold up to the heat.
Toss in some wool dryer balls to prevent clumping when using a dryer.
If air drying, lay it flat, on a drying rack, or hang it on a clean surface or a clothesline. Check your quilt periodically and flip it over to ensure both sides dry evenly. Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fading, especially if your quilt has vibrant colors.
Feel free to use an iron on a very low heat setting to remove any remaining wrinkles if needed.
